The BCCA WEEKLY January 26, 2018

BC Christian Academy 25th Anniversary Logo

Happy Friday BCCA Families!

We’re near the end of January, and despite the interesting weather (rain, cold, wind, a little bit of snow) that brought sniffles and coughing to many, there has been a great deal of activity at school. After our successful International Festival, we went straight away to our Open House Pancake Breakfast where invited families were able to have a look around and learn about our school, mingle with teachers, staff and parents and be treated to BCCA’s warmth and hospitality.

There is more in store for us in the coming month but before we proceed, let us thank the Lord for the opportunity we had in our Open House to introduce the 3 C’s that are truly important to us and to a Christian education: Christ, Community and Compassion.

Here are some highlights and what to expect the coming weeks:

Snapshots of the Open House Pancake Breakfast last January 20th

Thank you to our parent volunteers, teachers and staff who helped make the Open House Pancake Breakfast last January 20th a success. It was a great year-opener for BCCA with over 30 families in attendance. They had a wonderful time meeting the teachers, touring the school and hearing our “C” Story. We look forward to seeing the families who came to the breakfast and information session, to actually register their children and become part of the BCCA Community on September 2018!

Please take note of NO SCHOOL DAYS

February 9 PRO-D DAY (NO SCHOOL K-12)

February 12 FAMILY DAY HOLIDAY (NO SCHOOL K-12)

Primary Skating Sessions on Fridays, January 26 & February 2

Our K-3 kids totalling to about 100 had their first skating activity last Friday, January 19 at the PoCo Rec Complex. They enjoyed spending time together, those who were just learning how to skate guided by those who were experts on the ice. It was a wonderful opportunity to boost their physical activity, learn sportsmanship, develop basic skills, overcome their fears and thankfully, no one hurt themselves! Everyone had fun!

Thank you to our parent volunteers and teachers who skated on ice with the students and helped them get on and off the ice, tie their skates and put on their helmets, etc.

Primary Skating Grp Pic Jan 19, 2018 KG

Today, January 26th they go to the PoCo Rec Complex again for their second skating session. The last session is next Friday, February 2. It goes from 10:45 – 11:45 AM.

The School Bus will transport the kids to the ice rink and leave the school at exactly 10:00 AM. Please remember to let the students wear boarding or hockey helmets when on ice (no bicycle helmets permitted). The arena has a limited supply of similar size helmets and recommends that skaters purchase used equipment or borrow from a friend if possible, to avoid disappointment. Don’t forget to have the kids wear suitable clothing (mittens, long socks, warm jacket and hat).

For more information on volunteering and PPP hours, please email your respective homeroom teachers.

Missions Fest 2018 today, January 26th

This year the Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 classes are privileged to attend the Missions Fest that takes place today, January 26th, at the Vancouver Convention Center at Canada Place. The students traveled early this morning by school bus eagerly anticipating the inspiring messages and engaging activities at the Mission Fest. It is the school’s hope that as the children take in the exhibits, workshops and presentations, that they would be inspired to participate in a missions trip one day, recognizing the global fellowship of Christians and Christ’s mission to help the needy and to reach out to distant parts of the world to spread the good news. We can’t wait to hear how the Missions Fest impacted our children and how God stirred their hearts to action!

Congratulations to HS Top Scorers in the Canadian Mathematics Contests

Each year our school takes part in various Math competitions and towards the end of last year, a number of our High School students took part in the Canadian Senior (CSMC) and Intermediate (SIMC) Mathematics contests. These contests are written by students throughout Canada and beyond and are problem solving based with written solutions to the questions. All the students who wrote performed very well and achieved good results.

Congratulations go to Jerry Meng, Wendy Liu and John Yoon who all scored in the top 25% of the country and were awarded certificates, with Jerry and John – the top scorers in the school for the two competitions – being awarded first place medals. There will be another opportunity in February for those in Grades 9 to 11 to enter a multiple choice based contest.

Urgent Prayer Request

One of our BCCA Parents Amancio Hernandez was injured last Saturday, January 20th at around 5:30 pm as he was hit by a car in a marked crosswalk at 7200 Cariboo Road. The speeding car that struck him left the scene and we are praying that they may come forward. Praise God that even when Amancio had sustained a number of injuries that will take time to heal, they were not life threatening. We request our BCCA Community to pray and support Amancio and his family during this difficult time. He is part of the “Spanish Dads” group that often help out around the school. If anyone is so inclined, there has been a GoFundMe page set up by his church to ease the burden of some expenses and hopefully will help in Amancio’s healing and recovery. The link is https://www.gofundme.com/amancio-hernandezs-recovery.

Amancio is a loving husband and father and we are trusting that the Lord will be with his family at this time of need.

SAFETY REMINDERS

One way traffic – traffic during drop off and pick up is one direction only – counterclockwise. Vehicles are to enter from Lincoln Avenue turning right to Fernwood Avenue, left turn at Oakdale to drop-off / pick-up, then turn left at Evergreen Avenue and turn left back to Lincoln Avenue.

Caution in drop-off areas – A reminder to all who are dropping students off at school to use caution and to respect signage in the drop off zone. Safety is of primary importance and we have had a few complaints of close calls and near misses. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Friendly Reminders

PPP HOURS COMPLETION BY JANUARY 31ST

Participating families must fulfill their total of 10 hours of volunteer work before the end of the

term on January 31st.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IMPORTANT

Students’ are more likely to succeed in school when they are present in class consistently. When students are absent from class, they miss integral parts of the learning process. If your child is sick and will be absent, please call the front office or email admissions@bcchristianacademy.ca and excuse them from school. If they have a medical appointment, please have your child bring a note from the doctor. It’s difficult for the teacher to build a student’s skills and progress if the student is frequently absent.

Let us continue to pray for the BCCA Board, the transitional plans and potential permanent home for our school. Let’s pray for divine direction for our teachers as they mentor our students, that God would bless their efforts and give them favor. Let ‘s pray that our children grow up into maturity in the Lord, growing in His grace with a conscious sense of His presence. May they continue to be built up with God’s wisdom, favor, love, strength, faith and thankfulness. Luke 2:52, Ephesians 4:15, Colossians 2:6-7

Thank you for partnering with us in all our endeavours. You have made BCCA a wonderful community that most of our students consider their second home.

In His Service,

ELIZABETH FONACIER
